Question:

Special place for dinner in Covent Garden, London?

My mum is coming to London and I've planned a great day with her - including lunch at Maze Grill (Gordon Ramsey). Later on I want to go for dinner near Covent Garden - and the reason for this is that there is a wine bar I'd like to take her too after dinner which is in that area.

So I need to find somewhere special for dinner, but we will have had a big lunch, so it can be light. I had thought about Chinatown but I'd like to go somewhere a tad fancier than that, if I can.

What would you suggest?

  1. Rules restaurant is the oldest established in London and quite an experience. They specialise in game and traditional things like roasts. The setting and the service style might well appeal to your mum. Its not cheap, but it is very good.

Another, somewhat similar, traditional, high quality restaurant on the other side of The Strand from Covent Garden, is Simpsons on the Strand. Again not cheap, but very good if you like that sort of thing.

  2. im from hawaii but i just went to london and loved St Johns Restaurant. i cant remember which underground station its near. i think it was farringdon? try the roast bone marrow and parsley salad.  make reservations few days in advance. hope you enjoy your stay

  3. You don't mention a cuisine preference, but if you like pan-Asian food I think Tamarai would be a good choice. It has a bar and turns into a club later, but earlier on it's got a good ambience and the decor is quite smart. Not cheap, but they are running some special offers on london-eating and toptable if price is an issue.

Enjoy your weekend. I'm sure you and your Mum will love Maze Grill! :)

  4. Hi there.

Covent Garden is a maze of overpriced rubbish, sorry - try www.sugarvine.co.uk for recommendations, but I would eat at the wine bar by preference.

    Good luck, Steve.

  5. A really nice place for a meal with your mum might be Clos Maggiore, in Covent Garden. Request a table in the main dining area.
