Question:

Special weapons and tactics?

I'm 17 years old, and I've been thinking of being a police officer mainly working for special weapons and tactics (s.w.a.t)

during middle school i got into a lot of trouble. just stupid things. and i also got charged with weapons in a weapon free school zone in 8th grade. i also had assault with a dangerous weapon at the same time, but that charge was dropped. i only got probation and ive never been in trouble before or after that. since I've been in high school i haven't been in any trouble. and i get pretty good grades.

and i know that they look back at your records and i was wondering what are my chances of being able to pursue that line of work?

  1. From an officers stand point, you have a little chance of being hired - honestly.  Middle school wasn't that long ago for you.  As long as these things are on your record, you probably won't ever be hired; I wouldn't hire you because of that.  I'm just being honest with you but, your chances of being hired in any government agency is slim to none.  You can however schedule a meeting with the Sheriff or Chief though and ask.

  2. Same chance as anyone else who applies....Good luck.

Of course, you should expect some questions about your past, but then you would be able to show the change in character that you have displayed since that unfortunate event....

I'd suggest doing some community work in the meantime, as it suggests that you want to work in this field to do good rather than just run about playing with guns.  (The dangerous weapon charge would not impress for SWAT despite having been dropped).
