Question:

Specific Heat vs My Oven?

Hi, this had bugged me when I learned about it in high school and haven't thought about it until recently.

As I was taught it, specific heat is the amount of energy required to change an object's temperature. If specific heat determines the amount of heat transfered between two objects, why does my oven heat food faster at 450° than it does at 350°?

  1. Specific heat will tell you the amount of heat you need to transfer to the turkey to cook it, but the rate at which heat is transferred depends on the temperature difference between the turkey and the oven. The hotter the oven, the faster heat is transferred.
