Question:

Spectacled vs. Pacific Parrotlets?

I am considering purchasing a parrotlet as my next pet.

However, I am curious as to the differences between the species.

Price? Temperament? Behavior?

I have heard that Spectacled P'lets are a bit less territorial and stubborn. But also that the Pacifics are more active and fun.

Anyone have experience with both?

  1. Yes, I have experience with both :-)

Spectacleds are not quite as outgoing as the Pacifics and can take a little time to warm up to you but they are generally more "laid back".  The other commonly kept pet parrotlet is a Green Rump, usually even more laid back than the Spectacled.  Green Rumps can also be a bit overwhelmed by too large of a cage.  These are generalities though and there are shy Pacifics, feisty Specs. and really outgoing Green Rumps.

Pricewise, a normal green Pacific will generally run around $150.00.  Spectacleds are pretty hard to find in most places and are around $300 - $350.00.  I believe the Green Rumps are around the same price as the Pacific, perhaps a little higher.  It's getting harder to find the Green Rumps these days as well.  Expect to pay more for a Pacific color mutation, price dependent upon the particular mutation you might want.

Tish, one of the ParrotletsPlus moderators, owns both a Pacific and a Green Rump.  I own both a Pacific and a Spectacled.

Your best bet is to find a reputable breeder, check references and ask the breeder to help you choose a bird with the personality you're looking for.  Also make sure the breeder has a good reputation for delivering hand-fed and **socialized** babies and that the parents are genetically sound and well paired.

    Hope this helps :-)

  2. I'm in the same boat as you.  I'm not sure which to get--spectacle are slightly more attractive though!  Hope someone can answer your question because I want to know too.
