  1. There are multiple learning disabilities that can cause the issues that you and your friend have. A Speech issue strictly has to do with being unable to say words correctly, known as articulation errors. This is a minor problem and can be embarrassing, but it really doesn't interfere with learning.

Your friend is more likely to have a language disorder, which has to do with problems understanding and processing language, in his case, spoken language. This is called a receptive language disability.

Your issues are more complex and could be the result of a language disorder as well, but the issue with comprehending what you are reading sounds more like a learning disability of some type. It could be a problem with immediate short term memory, in which what one sees or hears tends to disappear quickly from the mind. Your mind doesn't have enough time to act on it before you "forget" what you just read. If this is the case, you will have more problems with longer passages than with short sentences.

If you are still in school, confer with the school counselor about being tested for learning disabilities. Also, there is a lot written about learning disabilities on the 'Net and even some tests. You might try writing "learning disability" into a search engine to see if anything sounds like you.
