Speed Up Network

Does anyone know how to speed up a Home Network with Pc's and Mac's on it. I used to get 60-100kb/sec. Now I am getting 15kb/sec. It is APPALLINGLY slow. The annoying thing is that we recently bought a new modem hoping it would fix this problem. Does anyone know how I can get it back up 60 or 100kb/sec on, primarily the Mac, and secondly a PC running Windows XP?

  1. One question for you.  Is your Network secure?? Some freeloader(s) could be stealing your wireless connection, which could really slow down your speeds.

  2. Hello

    Why slow-speed network »

    If this has been, there are several possibilities:

    1, because you might not configure the machine (should consider upgrading the hardware);

    2, you may access the bandwidth is not enough, Internet slow.

    If it is only recently that may be:

    1, might be poisoned, you can be in the "Task Manager" looking for suspicious things, or "Internet assistant" of treatment;

    2, may be your available hard drive space, the disk should be removed;

    3, you may be the "INTERNET temporary file" too much, consider the clean-up;

  3. This definitely sounds like an ISP issue. When I first got my cable connection we were the only ones on the block with broadband, and our internet absolutely blazed. Now that broadband is commonplace every house on the street has it, and it has slowed to a crawl even on my custom built high end PC.

    Most speed issues these days are ISP's over-extending their network. They add more users without upgrading their infrastructure and it is hurting us the consumers. They are more worried about making the bucks than pleasing the customers. It is sad, but at least in the U.S. it is a rapidly increasing problem. Hopefully they will catch up with the times but it may take some time to adjust to the expansion.

    Definitely call them up though - it may just be that your line isn't properly filtered, or that something on their end isn't set up quite right. Sometimes it is a small issue or mistake and they will be happy to fix it for you. Can't hurt to try.

    Another possible issue is interference. If you are using wireless, make sure you don't have cordless phones and microwaves near the router the computers. Both of these devices operate in the same frequency range as Wi-Fi and will definitely slow/stop your connection.

    Hopefully it is something simple so that you can get back up and running at full steam. Good luck and happy surfing!!

  4. Assuming you are running on a DSL  line

    First make sure all the phone jacks in use have filters on them.  make sure the jack used by the modem/router has a splitter on it

    Second call your isp
