  1. There could have been another car behind you or in the next lane and the camera flashed that car

  2. I'm not sure if you will or not.  Is it at all possible that your speedometer isn't reading the correct speed?

A mechanic can test it for you.

  3. Probably Not once the system discovers your actual speed and compares it with the speed limit. if you do get a letter you are able to appeal against the fine.

    hope this helps!!!

  4. my speedometer registers 5 over what those signs are saying.  I've never known letters to go out from those signs.  I've seen them register the posted speed limit and I've seen some that show you what you are doing.  Never got a  letter.

  5. Fiona is quite right - the rest of the answers are given in ignorance of the local circumstances.

I live close to the A77 and it used to be the case that hardly a day went by without a fatality. Since the introduction of the average speed cameras this has changed dramactically.

Believe me, if you have just one previous speeding conviction, you are looking at the possibility of a £300-plus fine, plus costs, plus a loss of your licence. But, if you have a series of previous offences, take a toothbrush with you to the Sheriff Court because you could well end up in Kilmarnock Prison for 28 days.

  6. well if you do get a letter I believe you should protest it.

The U S is putting these things on the road and they are not that accurate. Dont be a sheep.

  7. Sure it was you? not someone on the oppsisite side of road or someone passing you?

Well if it was you you'll recieve the ticket stating your speed, and if its diff to what your saying get your clocks checked on your car and / or try and appeal the ticket but you wont have a lot of chance of beating a camera in court

  8. If you drove to Prestwick Airport and a speed camera flashed, then you were on the A77.

The A77 has a poor accident record caused, in the main, by speeding drivers.

The speed cameras on the A77 are mounted over each carraigeway and are "average speed" camera. As your vehicle approaches, the computer reads your number plate and compares the time with that at each previous speed camera. If your average speed over that section exceeds the speed limit, then "flash".

As I travel along the A77 each day, I am amused at the idiots who see an overhead camera and slow down to pass it, then after having passed it, speed up again!

Given the accident record of the A77, you will not get a "letter". If it is your first speeding offence you will get an automatic fixed penalty charge. If you have been caught speeding before, then instead of a penalty charge, you will be "invited out" to a day at Ayr - to the Sheriff Court.

In the last two years, the penalties given by the Sheriff range from fines in three figures to terms of imprisonment. Most Sheriffs also impose disqualification bans.

Now, personally, as a regular user of the A77, I have no sympathy with your predicament.

  9. The cameras do occasionally flash when they're not meant to. It's possible that someone else driving next to you was going too fast so the camera picked them up. At any rate, the camera can see how fast you're going, so you shouldn't get a letter if you were within the speed limit.

Of course, it's possible you were actually in a 40mph zone. You might have a legal case for it being poorly signposted, but I wouldn't count on it.
