  1. The maximum speed is on motorways, 120km/h (75mph). Speeds on other roads are a lot slower.

What you say about driving around on a provisional licence and the huge wait was right. Waiting times now start at just over a month depending on where you want to take it, and being able to drive a car without supervision on your 2nd provisional licence (ie after 2 years with a provisional licence) used to be right but it is being phased out now.

You can still ride tractors and steamrollers on a provisional licence (now called a learner permit) without even using L plates.

  2. That's right. The speed limit on our motorways is 12mph. Rodge was caught doing 18 in his tractor one night. He ended up doing 6 months in the slammer.

  3. No speed limits here are in miles per hour.  The lowest on public   roads is 50 kph (kilometres).  You have to be accompanied by a qualified driver on your first provisional but you can drive yourself on a second provisional.    We have enough bad drivers here so don't come here if you can't drive just to expect an easy time.

    Thanks!

  4. Has it occurred to you that possibly your new student is still on the provisional & taking lessons because she's not the brightest & possibly shouldn't be allowed to drive?  There were long waiting lists for the driving test because of a shortage of qualified personnel to do them - a friend of a friend, signed up for her test on the same date she started her driving lessons, her test date was set for nine months later & she was driving by then.  Because people were allowed to drive without a licensed driver on their second provisional also left the system open to abuse & while people followed the rules, they didn't exactly fall over themselves to go for the full licence.

Some of the roads in the country areas are bad but I've never been on one that was so bad the driver had to go at 12mph, possibly in the towns or cities during rush hour.  I would take anything this woman says with a generous dose of salt because it sounds to me like she doesn't have a clue, are you sure she even had a provisional licence in Ireland?

  5. If you are looking for information about low speed limits in Ireland, Bull Island has received attention recently for having a speed limit of 5km p/h on the Bull Road Bridge. A radio show sent a reporter out to try and do 5km p/h on his motorbike.

  6. yes you can get a provisional at the age of 17 and you are entitled to drive then!! the speed limit is 100kph on main roads and 120kph on motorways!! on back roads(narrow country roads) the speed limit is lower! you can have the provisional for 2 years i think and then you must past your exam to drive on the road!

  7. What speed limits?Ah now c'mon you're pullin' me leg?

  8. The speed limits in Ireland are now in kilometres per hour, the fastest you can go on main roads is 100 km (approx. 60 miles) an hour, and 120 km /hour on the few motorways we have.

As for the provisional licence, you must have a licenced driver in the car with you if you're driving on a provisional licence. If there are provisional drivers listed as named drivers with the insurers of the car, the insurance premium is a lot higher. Pass your test as soon as you can.

  9. no limits that low, but it is true about the provisional licence, you are supposed to have a qualified driver with you but people never do and if they get pulled the guards will do nothing about it. the roads are terrible and people drive like lunatics. there is not even street lighting outside of the cities.
