  1. You only have to do two things. Get very strong and practice short top speed sprints. Research proves that speed is totally determined by how much support force a runner has at ground contact. So, get very strong by doing isometric calf raises, dead lifts and hamstring curls. Also try altitude drops where you jump off a chair and stick the landing without collapsing at the ankle and knee. Do these workouts a few times a week and practice short top speed sprints

  2. Muscles -- all? haha mainly arms, legs, calves, etc...all the important ones :)

Practice sprinting various distances...and keep at it

My track team uses parachutes (velcro'ed to their waists)...to practice starting off. Also, we use giant rubber bands (held around our waists), and someone holds the ends behind you and pulls back while you try to sprint hard.

Both the parachutes and giant rubber bands will improve on your explosiveness.

Hope I helped...Good Luck and Have Fun!
