Question:

Speeding Ticket in NJ

Hi, I'm 20F and I never got a speeding ticket before so I'm a little confused!!

I was going 75 in a 40 zone (yes yes stupid i know lol)

Can someone help me? Do I NEED to go to court? Can I plead guilty? If so, what do I do, how do I approach doing so?

Or should I just pay the ticket, and how many points is this, what is my penalty, what is going to happen? Also will this make my insurance go up?

If someone can help me and explain in detail what I am supposed to do and what will happen, I would appriciate it! Thanks!

  1. Just pay it.  Here is all the info you need:

  2. I live in TN and in most cases it will make your insurance go up.  Some states offer a defensive driving course where you go to court and plead guilty and the judge will make you pay the ticket still and possibly court costs and you will take a class to keep it off your record!

You should be able to do this if its your first ticket and its offered in your state!

  3. You can just pay the ticket (usually "court appearance required" is not checked off), which basically means you plead guilty, you admit you were speeding. If you want to contest the ticket then you have to go to court.

Yes, you will get points on your license and yes, your insurance will most likely go up for the duration of the points on your license, usually three years. If memory serves me correct you will be assessed three points on your license and three insurance points on your insurance rates.

  4. You are SCREWED!!!! In most of that state traffic court is kangaroo court these little municipalities use the traffic cops like tax collectors and your ticket is revenue for the town, county and state in some cases. First of all you are GUILTY period your insurance might go up.

You will go down to the kangaroo court line up with the other suckers and you don't need to add a blood sucking lawyer to the equation. There will be most likely a prosecutor!(god give me strength for traffic offenses) this  person willoffer you several choices depending on how high a fine you want to pay the points will vary according to your choice.one choice will be most expensive becuase it will include a fee that goes to the state for no good reason. In Jersey justice is not the goal of traffic court it is revenue enhancement. try buying your self some time request continuences as many as they allow and when you pay us request to make payments over pay thie last installment by a dollar or two and NEVER cash the refund check. I heard it delays the processing and you insurance penalties.

  5. If the ticket is marked on the back that a court appearance is required, you or an attorney acting on your behalf must appear in court.  I would really get a lawyer on this one, if anything else to avoid points.  35 mph over the limit in my jurisdiction would be 3-4 points on your license and SERIOUS fines.  YES, it will make your insurance go up.  You can just pay it if you want to (if it's not marked that you have to appear.  Here for 35 mph over you would have to appear), but I would get a lawyer to help with it.

  6. Just pay it!

You know you did it. Doing anything else would be even more dishonorable than driving so recklessly in the first place.

You're getting off real easy if the "Court appearance required" box hasn't been checked off. You can just mail it in.

Up until a few years ago, 30 or more over the limit was a MANDATORY loss of license in NJ.

Even though its no longer mandatory, only the most incompetent judges will fail to pull your license for a violation like this.
