I have got a Reckless driving ticket for 82/55 speed limit in VA. I could not prepay my ticket online and my case type is mentioned as Misdemeanors. Anyone have idea in this context what is Misdemeanor meaning? Is it anything related to Crime?

  1. A charge of reckless driving is a Class 1 Misdemeanor, and is not prepayable. On your ticket it has a court date, time, and address on the left side. You need to appear in court on that date. A Class 1 Misdemeanor is punishable by up to 12 months in jail and/or a $2500 fine. Be prepared to pay some hefty fines for that one, and slow down. A reckless driving charge in Virginia is also worth -6 points on your driving record through the DMV. You may look into taking a driver's improvement clinic to regain some of those points, but you may also need to be prepared to face some punishment because you were going almost 30mph over the limit!

  2. I can only speak from experience in Minnesota.  A reckless driving charge is a misdemeanor offense (which is considered a criminal offense).  In MN the max penalty is a $1000 fine and 90 days in jail (although you wouldn't see that on a first offense.)

  3. Reckless Driving is a misdemeanor in VA.  It is thus a jailable offense and you are required a hearing.

  4. Yes, a misdemeanor is a criminal offense punishable by less than one year in jail.

In some states, simple speeding is a misdemeanor. However, this is for penalty reasons only. Many states do not include traffic misdemeanors on a criminal history. It will only go on your driving record.

You can consult the court clerk, or an attorney, to find out what the policy is in Virginia.

  5. typically a misdemeanor is a criminal charge and not simply a traffic violation. driving over 20 over the speed limit in VA is a reckless driving charge. you would probably do well to contact an attorney if you can afford one.
