Ok my fiance just got a speeding ticket his first ticket ever!! He was doing 44 in a 35. He has progressive insurance the cop told him that his insurance wouldnt go up. But I dont know if that is true. I was wondering if he pays it off or goes to court and see what happens will his insurance go up since it is his first ticket? If it helps we live in North Carolina. I was just wondering what is the best way out because right now we cant afford to much money. He works two jobs got laied off one because no business and expecting second child at anytime. So was just wondering if anybody could give up information on what is best? Thank you and somepeople said something about driving school?? But do you take that before or after court?

  1. It depends on the insurer, and what state you are in.  He'll have to call Progressive in NC and ask them.

Progressive is pretty aggressive about surcharging for points.

  2. Usually your insurance is said to go up, however, if you do go to court and plead guilty they usually drop it to a lesser offense, depending on what state you are in. I am from NY, and I was doing a 35 in a 20, and they reduced it to a "cell phone" violation when I showed up in court. This did not result in any points taken from my liscence, as well as it not being a "moving violation". The driving school would not result in you paying a lower fee, however it would get you points back on your liscence that you lost. Good Luck!

  3. I have Progressive Insurance as well and, yes, your rates will go up.  Progressive holds the violation for 3 years; however, if you have no further traffic violations the rates gradually go back down over that 3 year period.  Additionally, some States will allow you to take Traffic School before the court date and, upon successful completion, will reduce the ticket to a non-traffic violation which will not affect your insurance.  I know Louisiana will do this, your fiance needs to contact the court to inquire about NC's policy.

  4. It is very likely that your insurance will go up. It will go back down over time, however, and when the points come off your fiance's license the insurance company usually "forgives" the ticket and lowers your rates.

Going to a driving school/defensive driving course can take points off your license and will also usually lower your insurance rates, but it depends on your insurance broker.

  5. It is possible your insurance will go up.  Just because you received a ticket does not mean your insurance will go up.  It costs the insurance companies money to run a driver license check.  There are several reason why they could and you have one of them.  If and when you add your fiance' to your policy or you go to his, they will likely run a check and find the ticket.   Now, your insurance company may have a program that may waive a speeding ticket depending on length of service and driving record.  With all that being said, driving school really isn't an option unless your about to loose your license.  The use to only allow you to attending driving school three times in your life.  Might want to check in on that......GOOD LUCK
