lets say you are on the highway and the speed limit is 55mph..i have learned that obviously you have to adjust your speed to the speed of the traffic of others but..anyways my question is: what is the maximum speed that you can go over that the cops wont pull you over. for example, "the speed limit is 55mph...is it safe to go 5-10 mph over or what??

  1. depends on the cop

  2. There is no such limit. Anything over the limit is fair game. Don't fool yourself thinking you can go 5 over and not be pulled.

  3. ever heard the saying "5 you're fine, 6 you're mine?" ;)

anything above 5 and they have a reason to pull you over.

  4. That depends on the officer, the district, and any enforcement details that may be running.  While usually not normal for someone to get pulled over for going a little over the speed limit, sometimes it may happen.  A couple years ago when the speed limit on one of our freeways went up to 70mph the State Patrol let it be known ahead of time that every violator, even 1mph over, would get a citation.  The only "safe" speed is the speed limit.

  5. MOST cops will allow 5 MPH over the limit to allow for variance of speedometers ( which are not all accurate from the factory and can vary quite a bit with something like a tire change).

Legally, if the limit is 55 and you are clocked at 56, you are speeding and can get a ticket. (PS....I was driving through another state on vacation and DID get a ticket for 66 in a 65. Cost me $85).

As noted above me, this will depend entirely on the Officer stopping you, your attitude in general, the conditions of the road and traffic for that moment, etc.

Basically, I just dont speed. It wont get you there any faster and the downside with the insurance rate increase just isnt worth it.

Best of luck and I hope this is useful to you

  6. anything over the posted limit is speeding, doing 35 in a 30 is speeding.
