Speeding with the shoulders....?

When I ask my horse to shoulder yield (he doesn't know how to yet) He speeds up. What should I do, thanks so much?

  1. Well since he hasn't learned the shoulder yield yet, pressure on his side means speed up to him. Whenever you ask him to yield, do a half halt at the same time to keep him slow.


  2. your horse is confusing the leg pressure with a cue to speed up. You need to accompany this cue with turning your hips, along with half halts.

    When starting out, the best  thing to do is to start him on a well balanced circle, making sure you are pushing him to the outside rein and not letting him lean on the inside rein...then continue that pressure and feeling, but just guide him in a straight line.  

  3. Kick him in the juevos.

  4. If a horse speeds up when you are giving it a different command check and release until it understands you aren't asking for speed but to yield.
