Question:

Speedo Fabric Breaks Down?

by  |  earlier

0 LIKES UnLike

I swim about 4 times a week in a chlorine pool and always rinse my swimuit in fresh water after I swim and let the swimsuit naturally dry. It seems that my swimsuits only last about 3 months before they start to break down and the material starts getting thin and small specs of white lint appear. What speedo swimsuits /Mfgr. or material content has the longest life. My current swimsuit is 80% nylon and 20% spandex - mfg JM.

Thanks in advance for any help Tim

  1. Well Im a swimmer too, and I swim around 6 times a week, and I have a reebok suit that has lasted me about 5 months and is still perfectly fine (no joke). Other good suits are the Endurance suits, which last a long time. Or you can always layer your suits to make drag.

  2. you're lucky that your suits last three months, mine fade after about a month and a half.

I usually just end up layering them...plus that creates more drag and makes a better workout.

If you do want to invest more money then there are ones that won't fade...

Or buy one that has a lining on the inside (back and front) that way even if it does fade, it still won't be see through

  3. What you are experiencing is a common problem.  Most lycra/spandex suits only last that long.  Polyester suits have a reputation for more durability - I can't speak to that yet as I just purchased my first one.  What I do to help make suits last longer is to have 3 or 4 in rotation.  Perhaps it is just a psychological thing, but replacing a suit after a year seems more economical.  I also tend to buy my suits in clusters so the expense is just one time per year.

  4. I've had the best luck with Nike and TYR. I bought Speedo when I first started swimming and had the same problem. No problems with the others.

  5. What you need to get is any of the major swimwear manufacturers, PBT or polyester lines. Lycra, spandex, elastane fibers wear out in chlorine. Here are some sites to get to Speedo endurance, etc. I have some Speedo endurance from 2005 and they are still just fine.
