I'm going to the Philippines in about a month with my family for about three weeks. Would about $700 be enough for my daughter to go shopping and hang out with cousins and friends for three weeks?

My daughter is 12 years old.

  1. More than enough in the Philippines or here in the USA.

  2. That is enough, more than enough for anyone to splurge in 3 weeks unless your daughter treats a dozen of people everyday. That is like 32,000+ equivalent to an employee's half the year salary but still it depends on your daughter's lifestyle. You pay at least $3 for one person to eat out in a decent restaurant, fast food meals are even cheaper. Starbucks coffee is like $3 up. Spa treatments range $3 - 15. Salon/ mall haircut $4 - $8. US brand clothes sold in the mall cost pretty much the same as in US after dollar to peso conversion. Riding taxis is a little expensive though especially in Manila, I pay minimum $3 from a hotel in Manila to the mall but that is way cheaper than what we pay for cabs in US.

  3. If that isn't enough then you hav a serious problem on your hands. Hope you don't give it to her in one lump sum.

  4. She'll have lots of friends the first week.  Then when she's broke, nobody knows her.

  5. I don't know why a 12 yr. old anywhere in the world would need $230 per week for anything.  This is absolutely crazy in my opinion.

$700 is more than the average family monthly income in the Philippines.

  6. Unless she earned that money by babysitting over the summer, that 700 bucks should be in the hands of the responsible adult guardian accompanying her on the trip who is responsible for keeping her out of trouble while she's there.

Somehow I sense that it probably won't be you.  Am I right?  I sense guilt is the reason you're giving her that money.
