Spices and herbs for insect repellent

Question

A while back I read an article that named certain herbs and spices that could repel bugs. For example: garlic plants will keep away mosquitoes. A spice (basil or something) sprinkled in the window sill would fend off flies. I searched the web but couldn't find any info. We live in the country and have bugs everywhere, especially those pesky garbage bugs. Can someone advise a website or info on this? thanks.

On a recent trip to a trout stream, bugs started biting me. I saw wild mint growing beside the creek and rubbed some of the leaves on my shoulders. The bugs stopped biting.
