Question:

Spider in my room!!!!!!!!!?

There was a spider in my room, it was rather large, and I got scared so I grabbed my paintball gun (no paint in it) and shot it with a blank blast of CO2. A bad move, because the spider vanished after being shot. I assume the blast blew it to somewhere else in the room, and there are plenty of places to hide. My question is, do you think the spider survived?

I live in massachusetts. Do any dangerous spiders live there? How long does a spider live? This spider was, with its legs included, about the size of a quarter.

I hope the blast killed it...

  1. Maybe you should try using a shoe next time.  Yes you have to get kinda close but it is a bit more accurate.  Chances are that it wasn't a venomous spider.  Probably some sort of grass spider or house spider.  I would try to clean up your room if necessary and make sure it's dead.  I'm not a fan of spiders either.

  2. the size of a quarter?  what color was it? it is very unlikley to be dangerous but if u see it again dont hesitate to kill it. i hate spiders but that seems harmless. hope i helped

  3. okay why would u shoot it with air first of all?!?! and second of all its probably still alive so I would sleep in another room until its gone and every once in a while go and see if its still there and if u see it smash it. If you dont see it for about a week its probably gone. trust me, its happened to me and this works. =]

  4. Probably not... spiders have pretty hard exoskeletons, so it would be tough to kill it with just air... Go to the dollar store & get a few of those glue mouse traps and put them on the floor right up against the wall in a few different places, especially on both sides of your bedroom door. It will probably walk over it & get stuck sooner or later... or you will see it crawl up the wall again eventually, just keep looking. Keep a book or something else flat & heavy near you so you can grab it quickly to squish it if it runs out again.

  5. That's actually not very large for a spider...

The blast most likely killed the spider, or damaged it to the point where it can't move, and flung the body somewhere within the depths of your room. But don't worry, most 'dangerous' spiders are only dangerous enough to kill something the size of a small dog or a cat--or less.

  6. Instead of killing use this tool to catch spiders -

You can remove a spider from inside your house by putting a jar over it. Then slip a piece of paper under the jar so that the opening is sealed, pick up the jar, and take the spider outside.

A broom is also a useful tool for moving a spider outside.

    Chemicals Are Ineffective

Using a pesticide is not a good solution to spider problems. "Insecticides will not provide long-term control" of spiders, according to the University of California, "and should not generally be used against spiders outdoors." Inside, "control by spraying is only temporary unless accompanied by housekeeping."

Washington State University Extension has a similar perspective: "Most spider problems can be solved without the use of chemicals." -

    Preventing Spider Problems

There are many ways to make your home less appealing to spiders. If there are cracks in your foundation or around windows and doors, seal them up.

Check places where water pipes and electrical lines enter your house, and caulk any openings.

Keep woodpiles and debris away from your house.

In storage areas, put boxes up off the floor and away from walls.

Seal boxes with tape to keep spiders from living inside them. In general, cleaning up clutter will mean you have fewer spiders.

Pruning vegetation away from your house and keeping the area next to the foundation clear will also make your house less attractive to spiders.

Outdoor lighting sometimes attracts insects, which in turn attracts spiders. You can move outdoor lighting away from windows and doors if this is a problem around your home. - http://www.pesticide.org/spiders.html
