i saw the ugliest brown spiders(i think they were spiders) on a dock the other day. they only looked like they had six legs and they looked dead. When you stepped on them they crunched and were hollow. On some trees nearby i found the same ones but they were furry. Can you tell me what these are? (they are not dock/fish spiders)

thanks guys/gals (:

  1. how big?

  2. its not a bug its a type of moss(but if it moves than i don't know)

  3. You can check them here -

  4. If they have 6 legs, it's not a spider, and most likely an insect.

  5. It sounds like an insect shed it's skin and the shells were left behind.  Cicadas do that, but are larger than what you described.

Many other insects do the same thing.

If you had a picture of one you could probably research it and figure out exactly what it was.

  6. I believe that these are forms of crustaceans. They are located everywhere in Australia. You can find them on walls, trees, practically anywhere. They were crunchy because they have been eaten by birds. They are actually a form of beetles known as coleoptera. As they have only 6 legs, they can not be spiders.  Don't be scared if you see them around, they are just little bugs!!

  7. doesn't spiders have 8 legs?

  8. I think what you saw were the shed skins of dragonfly nymphs.  If you were on a dock, you were probably near water, and the nymphs of dragonflies live in the water until they are ready to become dragonflies, at which time they climb out of the water and split the skins and the dragonflies come out, similar to cocoons and butterflies.  The nymph skins are this dark grey/brownish color, kind of large, probably about 3/4 to 1" in length, kind of flattened and wide, and dried out, which explains the crunch.  They are VERY ugly, just like you said.  Enough to make you scream when you see them if you don't know what they are.
