Question:

Spiders in laundry detergent?

I went to go do laundry today and I opened up the box of powdered detergent to find two tiny spiders having made webs at the corners of the inside of the box. Is this natural behavior for them? I thought detergent was toxic to them or something like that.

  1. That is kinda strange..

If the detergent does not contain bleach, then it isn't that toxic.  It is possible that the spiders got trapped in it somehow and just set up a web in there, or that they are going after something that will eat the cardboard.  Also, such tiny spiders like to build tiny webs in tiny spaces, and it is possible that they just figured a box of detergent matches their desired conditions.

  2. If combined with moisture, detergent would remove the oil off the spiders skin.  Causing it to suffocate.  Its kind of like one making a web on the bottom of a stream bed.  They don't know anything about flash floods.

  3. Wow how long has it been since you did laundry... just kidding... i don't think detergent is toxic unless consumed in large quantities and they didn't eat it they just thought it was a nice place to live.
