Question:

Spiral Note Book request

I hate five subject spiral note books for students, I used them myself and personally hated ripping out my notes. My son is soon to be in the 4th grade and Instead of getting him a 5 subject spiral notebook; I have gotten him a Avery EZ Binder 1 inch, and some dividers and looseleaf paper. This is an easier way for me to assist him in keeping his book organized and no need to rip his work out. He can place his test and homework back into his subject area and study more efficient. Do you think that it will pose a problem to get the Binder instead of the Spiral 5 subject notebook?

  1. I am in love with 5-subject notebooks.  I've been using them since freshman year of high school (I'm now a senior in university), and using them was the first time in my life I was ever organized.  I never tore out my notes, and I still have all my notes still in these spiral-bound notebooks from the last three years.  I use them for two subjects each - the first two sections are for one class, the next two sections are for another class, and the last section is scrap paper.

If you use a binder, you may have a new organizational problem: putting papers into the plastic folders built into the binder doesn't work too well because they don't have enough space for worksheets, tests, and quizzes which are prevalent in 4th grade classrooms.  If you want to punch holes in each of these papers, then your son must have somewhere to put the pages until he has access to a three-hole punch.  I know that I would lose things by the end of the day if I had to keep track of them in a loose-leaf binder.  There are slim, portable three-hole punches available which can snap into the binder, but these break easily.

I personally am not a fan of binders, and if your son's teacher is recommending the 5-subject notebook, I'd follow her advice... but if you're bound and determined to use the binder it's workable.  Difficult, but workable.
