OK, so one day I was @ YMCA with my Dad and brother. It seemed like every TWO seconds, someone was spitting in the pool. And there were people blowing their noses into the pool! I also saw/felt two YELLOW AND HOT spots of the pool. PEE!! GROSS!!!! Opinions on this? Can I ACTUALLY do something about this?

  1. Hello.  Doing any of these things is, in the State of California, a violation of title XXII of the Health and Safety Code.  If you know this is happening you should complain to the Lifeguard or the Pool Manager, though realisticly there is not much they can do other than issue warnings to the offending swimmers.

The good news is that in a properly maintained swimming pool these activities actually pose extremely low risk.  The Chlorine or Bromine in the pool will nuetralize any possible infectious material within a couple of seconds, if not more quickly.  So you are really not at any great risk.

The most serious danger of infection in public pools is:

    1.  If they are not properly maintained and free-chlorine levels drop below an effective level.

    2.  The introduction of fecal matter (poo) into the pool, which can contain infective material that resists the chlorine's disinfection.

The pool staff should be enforcing showers for all bathers, as well as informing/educating them to healthy behaviors.

You really should express your concerns to pool staff.

  2. talk to the people at the front desk or the life guard, thats discusting

  3. Complain to the lifeguard and/or Aquatics director. Sometimes they can't see everything, but if you tell them I sure they will help.

  4. get your own pool.

  5. Well, its a public pool, so im sure you probably cant do much. however if your really grosed out by it you could talk to the owners or managment and ask them to put of a notice not to do all that stuff. wow, that really is disgusting.
