Spitting on a baseball field

Most baseball players spit because they either have chewing tobacco in their mouths or the have sunflower seed shells to spit out. It has always been considered part of baseball since in became a sport in 1869. You're just standing on the field and sometimes when you don't have a ball hit to you it gets boring, and since you can't pick grass... you just spit.

It is a disgusting thing to do. Anytime a player or coach spits the camera does a close up. The field is sacred. No one has the right to spit on the field.

its just something that has always been associated with baseball, youre standing in the field doing nothing a lot of the time so you get bored and your spit its just common in baseball more than most because there is more down time.

They are getting rid of sunflower seeds or getting rid of their saliva.

The main thing is that a lotta baseball players gain the habit of spitting.  Actually a lotta men in general has the habit of spitting its one thats almost impossible to get rid of, especially when you see all the other guys do it and you're in the open grass where its ok to do it.

Also swallow saliva is just kinda weird.  Mainly cuz its already in your mouth and you're about to bat, its just wierd to feel it in your throat and trying to concentrate on the pitch.
