I just got a wire modem for myself and my roommate last week. But the thing only has one jack for an ethernet cord so we can only use it one at a time. It's driving me crazy! It there any sort of splitter or something I can use (or a proper name) ? Can anyone give suggestions on where to find one?

  1. just buy a small switch 5 or 8 ports and conect that one port you have in the modem to the switch and from the switch you can take a wire to you and one to your mate ,, and you will have extra free points in the switch :) may be someone alse want to share it with you :d

    Enjoy

  2. 2 options.

1: a router.(wired) its pretty much a splitter. but, you need more ethernet cables. (internet cables)

2: a wireless router. tend to cost about the same, but give the mobility of not being tangled up in wires.

  3. Buy a router. You could go with a wired one, but you might as well spend a little more and get wireless so you're ready if one of you gets a laptop. I recommend this one:

All you do is plug the Ethernet from the modem into the correct port on the router, then run Ethernet from the other ports to the computers. The router will have instructions, too. Plus, if you want, you can get wireless adapters for desktops and live without wires. Here is a good one:

  4. Hey,

You are definately going to need to get a router

This will allow you to have mulitple computers share the same modem.  There are a lot of different ones out there but you can probably pick one up for around $50 - $100 at your local computer store and maybe a little cheaper off the internet. Some models even have a wireless Access Point too so if you ever get a laptop or other wireless equipment, you can hook it up to your network too.  A brand name will probobly be best like; Linksys, D=Link, or Netgear

Oh yeah make sure you don't confuse yourself with a router and a switch.  Not to go into details, but a router will automatically assign a IP Address to your coputer to hook up to the internet and make it look like one connection to your ISP ( Internet Service Provider) and a switch won't.
