  1. first of all, its is NOT a split leap. it is called a sodasha. and by the way, does your teacher call it a split leap?? because that's not at all the right term. anyways, you have to really plie (if you were not tought what that is, its when you bend your knees) and really push off your legs. try to really stretch your legs to execuite your split during the sodasha. o-and sorry about the whole not split leap-sodasha thing-it really bugs me as a dancer when people are not taught the correct terms.

    hope that helps :)

  2. Well you may be jumping to far in distance and not high enough. If you jump up more you'll have more time to execute the split and will still travel enough forward. Also make sure to kick your front leg as high as you can going into the jump and pop your back leg afterwards.

    Good Luck!!

  3. what i did to perfect my leaps is to jump on a trampoline and in place shoot straight-up into the leap position, because it gets you used to it on land. just keep trying and when you're in the air, dont freak out! hope this helps =]

  4. how we do them for jazz and ballet is different but when we do ballet we take two steps then just kick your leg out and jump off the other. and stretch out in the split. Its harder to describe than it is to demonstrate. :[ Sorry if you don't understand what I mean.

  5. To execute a split leap, in full split you have to have: the flexibility; even if you can do the splits on the floor, often you have to be comfortable in this and can extend further as it is hard to co-ordinate this in the air.

You also require the height, as you have more time to extend your legs, so work on getting power from your legs to jump higher.

A way in which I got my legs higher was to strap ankle weights around your ankles and then do your split leap- your legs will be low, but keep working and once you take them off they will be improved- it strengthens you.

The amount of weight can vary, with your build and ability, etc... I used just 1kg on each leg, I think.

    Hope that helped. =)

  6. Why does it have to be full split? A Grande Jete ( split leap ) does not have to be full. It is more an 'up and over' leap rather than along. Check you're not trying to achieve more than you need to.

  7. Aha, well hello, twinkletoes!!

With split leaps, you need a good attitude. Dance is almost as much skill as it is attitude. If you say to yourself, 'I am going to do an awesome split jump. Hear that legs?!' then you most likely will (because you know you have the skill aka: splits).

Hope this helps, have a nice day!!

    =)
