  1. the key to a good split step is being able to stop yourself so you can redirect your momentum in the direction you want. one exercise we had to do on the tennis team was to run to all of the corners of the court and back to the center of the baseline and touch each corner with our hands. this helps you learn how to slow yourself down in order to change momentum to another direction. getting a good feel for that will help you get a better feel at stopping yourself in a split step and then being able to go forward into a volley.

  2. just keep jumping around !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    like this

    jump

                          jump

                             jump

            jump

    jump

                   jump

    jump

  3. it's simple, though my Russian and Italian coaches had to tell me thousands of times.

Say you are running to the net to make a volley shot...

    (A) do you run right into the ball and swing away,

    or

    (B) you run to the middle of the net, do a split step kinda like a sumo wrestlers stance (exaggeration) and then run or jump or whatever you do to get to the volley that follows.

If you picked the second question you are right!

  4. hmmmm.....well the most important thing is staying light on your feet.  when you see your opponent about to make contact with the ball, thats when you should start your split step.  Then we you see the ball's general direction, you can recover off the split step easily to reach the next ball.  Try picturing it in your mind first if you need to, that helps me sometimes :P
