Splitting Lanes?

i live in cali where lane splitting on a motorcycle is legal, and im getting my first bike soon. i was jus wondering how much experience should a rider have until they should start splitting lanes?pretty much the only experience i hav on a bike is riding around in a parking lot at the MSF course, so there is no way in heck i would split lanes anytime soon cause id probably clip someones side mirror.

Dont do it until you feel comfortable with you abilities. Could be next week, could be next year.

You are right, take your time - practicing in a parking lot doesn't come close to actual driving in live traffic, especially splitting lanes.  Remember that splitting lanes needs more than just driving and maneuvering skills, but more importantly the ability to read existing traffic conditions and to gauge what the others drivers might do.  Be safe.
