Splitting tire-heavy tools bicycle-compatability?

i got a hand me down from my dad and its an old heavy tools mountain bike. the back tire is splitting but other than that it's not in bad condition. the tires are 27 in and i would prefer one that semi-matches the front tire. any ideas?

If it has 27" wheels it is NOT a mountain bike.

This size tire is generally available at any bike shop for under $20... probably under $10.
