*Spoiler Alert* What really happened in Michael Connelly's City of Bones?

I have just finished reading Michael Connelly's City of Bones. I am still a little confused by Julia Brasher's shooting. Did she shoot herself so she could have a battle scar like Harry Bosch? Did she hope to pull like what happened in Denzel Washington's Training Day - shoot herself to use it as justification to shoot Stokes? Seeing how she apparently shot herself in the left shoulder it seems unreasonable that it was accidental from putting the gun back in the holster, and her looking around before shooting seems to support the assertion that it was intentional.

However the motive of having a scar or looking like a hero apprehending someone they just wanted to question seems kinda weak. Does anyone have any other ideas on what happened or heard of any clarification from Michael Connelly as to what happened?
