At what age do you believe that a child is old enough to realize that s/he is being spoiled and may have a negative effect on his/her later personality?

  1. Never start spoiling them and you won't have this problem. Kids learn young. By a year old, they can pick up on the idea of "if I cry, they'll give me whatever I want!"  Those are the families you see in Walmart where the kids are screaming and throwing a fit, so the mom puts a Barbie doll in the cart to "bribe" them to stop crying....

  2. We have a 2 1/2 year old nephew who is grandma's favorite, and he knows it. He's a sweetheart, but knows he gets what he wants (with most family members).

  3. It depends on what you mean by spoiling. If you mean by love and cuddles, it' s impossible to spoil a child that way but if it's with material things then it's a good idea not to start spoiling them. My son gets loads of things because we have a very big family and he is begining to take it for granted. It makes life very difficult sometimes. He is 4 and I noticed the impact when he was around the age of 3.

  4. at 6 months old if everytime the baby cries you give him/her a bottle they realize that every action has a reaction.

  5. Usually by about 1 1/2- 2 years old is when they really start to catch on. It really depends on the child. I have a niece who is 4 that at 3 she starting playing us. She would cry and throw herself on the ground when she did not get what she wanted because my SIL always bought her everything. Even today she is pretty bad.

With my kid I try to use the reward system. We put in place if you do abc you earn xyz. This seems to help.
