  1. I find it best to deal with the Red Crescent. I always use them for charity, and they're the largest organization out there.

  2. The largest organizations aren't necessarily the best - they often have the largest % of admin fees.

You can sponsor a child for approx $25 / month through Baal Dan Charities (www.baaldan.com).  Baal Dan's main goal is to provide street children and orphans with food, clothing, etc.  However, they also have a child sponsorship program for very impoverished children attending (or trying to attend) school in India.  The sponsorship will provide the child with: food, clothing, school uniform, school supplies, tuition, rent, and all other basic needs.

When sponsoring a child, there are almost no administrative fees involved on Baal Dan's part - this means almost 100% of your donation will go straight to the kids.  If you contact them (info@baaldan.com), they will send you bio's of kids you can sponsor, and more info about the school they are attending.

    You can read more here:

P.S. I am the secretary & webmaster of Baal Dan, so I can assure you that your donation will be put to good use.  And either me or my sister (founder and president), are easy to contact and will be happy to provide you with as many details we can about the child you are sponsoring, as well as updates about them in the future.

Here is a recent news story on this charity:

  3. CRY. they are the best.
