Question:

Sponsoring an American Child?

My mother, RIP, was a foster care child, in the 1940-1965 time period. She told me about how she had a secret sponser, from just after she entered foster care, until she finished high school. This sponser, saw to it that she had essentials, out side of what the state provided for her.Though she never met, or knew these people, they would regularily send her a box on her birthday. It was very basic, usually a new dress, undergarments and a new pair of shoes each year. Some other basics were that they bought her a set of her school pictures, and always kept just one small one. The rest, were sent to my mother. How do I find an organization here in the US that will allow private sponsership? Since my mother has passed away, the little bit of money I had been sending her each week, I have kept the budget the same, as though I am sending to someone else. I want to sponser an American child.

  1. What a wonderful thing to want to do.  I wish you luck in helping someone.  Perhaps you could also be a Big sister, and have a child come visit you.  I think there's a website for it, but I don't really know.  Once again, I wish you all the best.

  2. I did a little searching & didn't find exactly what you were talking about are you sure that your moms "sponsor" wasn't a parent or family member who just couldn't take care of her themselves?

I did find a site that has to do with children who are coming out of foster care due to age, this site may be beneficial to you.
