Sporting Lisbon’s Marat Izmailov has undergone surgery to cure the patellar tendon problem in his knee. The operation has been deemed successful and the striker will continue his recovery in the next few months.
Izmailov’s great start to the 2011/2012 Primeira Liga season now looks to be a thing of the past.
The forward helped his team gain a share of the spoils in their opening fixture against Olhanense with a goal late on and then continued his fine form in the next few games. He got on the score sheet in back-to-back matches against Maritimo and Pacos de
Ferreira, with his strike against the latter helping acquire three points.
However, Izmailov’s old injury curse began to haunt him once again. His troublesome knee has prevented him from fulfilling his true potential over the last two years and got the better of him this campaign.
With a lengthy spell on the sidelines looming large, Sporting’s medical team decided to operate and cure the problem once and for all. Manager Domingos Paciência expressed his sympathy for the player but reiterated that it was for the best.
Izmailov underwent surgical procedure under the tutelage of Dr. Peter Person at the Hospital of Light in Lisbon. According to the Sportinguistas’ statemen, the treatment went according to plan.
A report on the club website said that the operation had been successful and the Dr. Person would be giving regular updates on the patient but it would still take some time for the attacker to return to the field.

“Marat Izmailov has already fulfilled the recovery program that has been established. Within the next few weeks, we will be provided with more information and regular reports on him from the clinic,” the statement read.
With is injury woes seemingly cured, Marat Izmailov will have channel all his energies into getting back in the game and return to his mercurial best.
