Sporting Lisbon's Oguchi Onyewu attributes US call-up to good club form – Liga Sagres News
Sporting Lisbon’s Oguchi Onyewu attributed his return to the United States line-up to the good form he has maintained at club level. The defender has won his last six games with the Portuguese side and has even scored; something which he claims earned him a re-call to represent his country.
American International, Oguchi Onyewu, signed for the Lions this summer after a disappointing spell at AC Milan.
Onyewu arrived at San Siro aiming to make his name amongst the elite of Europe but he failed to make an impact in his new surroundings. The Italian side were also keen to offload the centre-back but instead decided to farm him out to http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/FC-Twente-c39233 last term.
In the Eredivisie, Onyewu made 8 appearances but was hardly able to prove his critics wrong. Following the end of his Dutch adventure, he was snapped by Sporting Lisbon on a three-year-deal.
At Estadio Jose Alvalade, the former Newcastle United took his time to properly settle in but once he got accustomed to the Portuguese game, he turned in some great performances.
Perhaps what really endeared him to the Sportinguistas faithful and announced his arrival in the Primeira Liga, was the late winner he scored against Rio Ave.
With the game trailing 2-2 near the end of the ninety minutes, Onyewu popped up to head in the winner and helped his team secure a vital three points away from home.
Since then the club have registered three more victories and have stretched their winning streak to six, something which the American stalwart claims helped him return to the National team fold once again.
Speaking to reporters, Onyewu said that his great form at club level convinced Jurgen Klinsmann to approach him for National team duty and that he would push hard to continue Sporting’s superb run.
"Definitely, at my club we have played a series of great games and fortunately I have been part of all these matches. I hope I can keep up this good form,” the defender was quoted as saying.
