AC Milan’s Oguchi Onyewu is being targeting by Portuguese giants Sporting Lisbon, according to the latest reports.
The American defender has been plying his trade with Milan since his move from Standard Liege in 2009 but has failed to impress during his spell and has been on loan to Dutch side Twente since January 2011.
The USA International initially played college football with Clemson University before moving to Ligue 1 with FC Metz in 2002.  But he did not make an impact at the French outfit and was loaned La Louvière and Standard Liège, the latter to which he made
his move permanent.
Onyewu received the U.S. Soccer Athlete of the Year award in 2006, which was quickly followed by a loan deal with English Premier League club, Newcastle United. His time with the Toon was not the best and his defensive partnership with http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Titus-Bramble-c35166 conceded
several goals, which lead to a fall-out with Coach Sam Allardyce.
After returning to the Stade Maurice Dufrasne in 2007, his performances picked up and he became an integral part of the team. His 6 ft 5 inch frame formed a solid wall in front of goal and was pivotal to the sides twenty-nine game unbeaten streak. For his
solidarity at the back, he was named in the Belgian league Best XI consecutively for two years.
His glittering performances for the Reds were being monitored by AC Milan and they eventually landed their man in 2009 on a three-year deal. Despite his size and capabilities, he was unable to break into the first team at the San Siro and the only highlight
of his transfer was the brawl against teammate Zlatan Ibrahimović.
In search of first team football, the American stalwart signed a loan deal with Twente and played 14 times for them in his short stint.
His International exposure with the US National Team, coupled with his strength made him a tough-tackling centre-back and he could prove to an excellent signing for the Lions who have suffered from a lack of good defenders in recent times. The player himself
would be keen to play in Portugal’s highest division week-in, week-out and a move could well materialize in the upcoming weeks.
