Sporting Lisbon manager Domingos Paciência defends his team after 3-1 defeat to Malaga – Report
Sporting Lisbon suffered a pre-season 3-1 defeat to Spanish side Malaga but coach Domingos Paciência was keen to defend his team and said that his side was not only young but was gelling together as well.
The Lions took on Malaga in a pre-season friendly but were no match for the resurgent Spanish outfit that eventually cruised to a 3-1 victory.
In light of this defeat, many have questioned the abilities of the expensively assembled squad and believe that Sporting are still far from being the best in http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Portugal-c2984.
However, in response, manager Domingos Paciência has defended his team and claimed that although his side made mistakes in the match, it was still pre-season and they were only going to improve.
"We are not pleased with the first part, we made defensive errors that resulted in goals from Malaga. In the second half the team came to different and better.  But it's still early; these games are for that very reason, to watch the team.” He said.
Sporting acquired the likes of http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Stijn-Schaars-c34229 earlier in the transfer window but their firepower was unable to prevent a defeat at the hands of Los Boquerones.
Paciência attributed this to the fact that some of his players like http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Diego-Capel-c11100 and Jeffren are still youngsters and have a long way to go before they work properly in the set-up.
“It is a young team that still is adapting. Capel and Jeffren, for example, have very recently and still have not adapted, and that takes time.” The manager added.
The coach also claimed that the side cannot be expected to win every single encounter they take part in and said that they will get better but will take time.
“There are still Izmailov, http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Luis-Aguiar-c22647, and others. You cannot ask that at this stage wins in all games. There are principles of play to improve,” Domingos Paciência concluded.
The Lisbon-based side are looking to win back the title from http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/FC-Porto-c39186 and kick-off their campaign with a home win game against Olhanense on August 14, 2011.
