Sporting Lisbon were unlucky not to sign Nolito, says former president Dias da Cunha – Report
Former president of Sporting Lisbon, Dias da Cunha, has claimed that the club should have signed Nolito from Barcelona but now have missed out on a great opportunity, as the forward is now netting goal after goal for Benfica.
Spain-born Nolito was on the fringes of the http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Barcelona-c38604 team last year, making only two appearances and was rotting on the sidelines until he signed for Benfica in the summer of 2011.
With the promise of regular game time and the allure of playing in prestigious competitions such as the UEFA Champions League, the winger made the switch and has now become an instant hit at Estadio da Luz.
Netting on his debut against http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Jorge-c19120 Jesus’ team and is relishing his decision to change clubs over the summer.
In lieu of his great form, former Sporting Lisbon president, Dias da Cunha, revealed that the Lions should have secured services of Nolito instead of splashing the cash for players like http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Ricky-van-Wolfswinkel-c31131 and Jeffren Suarez, which has resulted in poor score lines.
"Sporting have not had the good fortune to hire Nolito, which has already matched a record of Benfica in the Eusebio. If Sporting were lucky enough to have some Nolito we would not be here to whine.”
Using his experience, the ex-Sportinguistas boss stressed that the club should now have total confidence in the squad and back manager Domingos Paciência’s decisions so that they can find success in the upcoming weeks.
“We must have confidence in the technical team and [Domingos Paciência] should be deeply respected."
Although the Lisbon outfit can curse their luck for not landing a talented player like Nolito, they can do nothing about it now as the Spaniard is plying his trade with arch-rivals Benfica and is consistently finding the back of the net with unnerving ease.
