Sports Hall of Fame: A Museum of Sporting Excellence
A sports hall of fame is a place where the greatest of the great sportsmen and women are honoured for their excellent achievements in their respective field of sports. It is a huge deal to be inducted into a sports hall of fame,
as it signifies that the country you belong to or the sport that you are a part of recognises your talent and your contribution to the industry. A lot of different sports have their own halls of fame and each one honours its own athletes for the great work
they have done in their careers.
There are numerous halls of fame and it would not be possible to mention each and every single one of them, so only three examples are going to be taken and explored further. The first will be an American Hall of Fame; the Baseball
Hall of Fame, the second will be the National Football Hall of Fame in the UK and the last will be the Australian Sports Hall of Fame.
The concept of the sports Hall of Fame is fairly recent, going back to the early 1900s, but there were generic halls of fame going back to a German one that was built between 1830 and 1842. The first ones started appearing in America
to honour their biggest sports stars. It seems the concept of honouring talented people and especially sports stars is a big part of American culture and part of their tradition. The big three sports in the country each have a dedicated hall of fame, and every
year, numerous athletes and sports figures are inducted into them. A sports hall of fame is defined as a type of museum that is set up for a particular sport to honour athletes from that sport who have achieved something great in their careers.
The National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum is a museum that is owned by private interest that is dedicated to the study and preservation of the sport of baseball. It was established in 1936 and is located in
New York. It gets an estimated 350,000 visitors every single year and also houses one of the biggest libraries on the sport of baseball in the world. There is a dedicated hall where the inductees to the hall of fame are placed. It is not only players that
are honoured but also managers, umpires, executives and even pioneers of the sport. The museum looks likely to remain popular among its fans for a long time to come.
Another interesting sports Hall of Fame is the
National Football Museum in the UK. It was established in 2002 and celebrates the greatest players, manager, and teams in English football. It may even allow players of other nationalities to be inducted into the hall of fame provided they have made
a great enough impact to the English game. Every year, a team of selectors choose ten members to be inducted into the pages of football history. The selection process is tough and the selectors are made up of previous greats such as Sir Alex Ferguson and Sir
Bobby Charlton. Even though it is a recent phenomenon, it is a good sign that the best players, managers and teams are being honoured in this way.
The final Hall of Fame to be looked at is the
Sport Australia Hall of Fame or SAHOF for short. The SAHOF was set up in 1985 and was inaugurated by Sir Donald Bradman, probably the greatest cricketer of all time. This is unlike the other two because it honours athletes specifically from Australia.
The SAHOF is a way of honouring those athletes such as Olympians, Paralympians and other stars who do not belong to a particular franchised sport. It is a good way to bring together all of the greatest athletes from Australia and honour their achievements
in sports.
Sports Halls of Fame are a way for a sport or a country to highlight the great milestones its athletes have achieved in their lives. Since a lot of human beings respond very positively to praise and this is one of the highest forms
of praise there is, we will continue to see a large number of people being inducted every year.
