Sports competition returns to Luzhniki Olympic Stadium – Athletics news
As sports returned to the Luzhniki Olympic Complex in Moscow, on Sunday, June 12, after a hiatus of eight years, the largest stadium of the country witnessed the commencement of the Moscow Challenge, which is a prelude to the 2013 IAAF World Championships.
The stadium is situated in the heart of Russian capital, Moscow.
The primary motive of organising the event was not only to initiate with the preparation of the stadium in context of the big event to be hosted two years down the line, but also to provide a chance to Russian athletes to prepare themselves for the European
Team Championships, which is to commence in Stockholm next week.
According to news, disciplines at the Moscow challenge comprised of Men’s 100m, 400m, 1500m, 3000m, 110m hurdles, Triple Jump and Shot Put competitions. While in the Women’s events, the meets contested were the 100m, 400m, 800m along with 400m hurdles, Long
Jump, Javelin Throw and the High jump.
In order to extend greater support to athletes, the event was deliberately organised on a holiday, so that more and more spectators would be able to come and see various contests. Not all seats of the country’s largest stadium with a capacity of 78,000 seats
were filled, yet, the overall response of the audience was good. There were thousands of spectators who took on the opportunity of witnessing the revival of sports in the stadium.
The investments made by viewers of the event certainly paid dividends, as many of the events contested before them were not only entertaining, but breathtaking also. Some of the most prominent performances depicted by athletes were comprised of Yekaterina
Martynova’s 800m run, who managed to mark her career best in a mere one minute and 59.17 seconds.
The battle behind her, aimed at grabbing second position, was also entertaining. For witnessing a time clocked 2:00.39 minutes, Yevgeniya Zinurova, the 28-year-old middle distance runner claimed a second position on the podium. He was followed by Yelena
Kofanova, who marked 2:00.56 minutes. Ending fourth in the respective meet was Anastasiya Vosmerikova, who managed to end the race in 2:00.68 minutes.
In the Men’s event, spectators observed the emergence of some new stellar performers which were comprised of Denis Alekseyev, who accomplished the desired 400m run in an emphatic 45.73 seconds. While on the Women’s side, for the equal distance, the field
was dominated by Lyudmila Litvinova, the 26-year old sprinter who had resumed her game after a hiatus of about 18 months. The young runner marked an impressive comeback for clocking 51.79 seconds. In the 100m Women’s run, it was Yekaterina Voronenkova, who
covered the desired distance in 11.43 seconds.
