Question:

Sports in college?

I wanted to get a scholarship in volleyball but my high school doesn't have a volleyball team this year; so, I was wondering do you have to play volleyball the whole time you're high school to be able to play in college. I also wanted to know if you can try out for a sport in college or does the volleyball coach have to ask you to play for his/her team?

  1. No you don't have to play volleyball the whole time you are in high school - but it would improve your chances.  If your school doesn't have a team, see if there is a local club team you can get on.  There are 2 ways to go about getting a scholarship - 1) put together a highlights tape of your volleyball and send it out to colleges yourself, or 2) decide where you are going to go to college and try to walk on (schools will usually hold tryouts and take 1 or 2 walk-ons to a team).

    Good luck!

  2. Playing the whole time in HS will definitely be a major plus!

  3. In order to get a scholarship, you will have had to play competitively for all four years and you'd have to prove you're good. What I suggest you do it join a club/traveling team in your area so that you consider playing, even if it's not with your highschool.

You can frequently join a team as a "walk-on," but if your school team is really good it would be hard to make it. If it's not, go talk to someone at the sports center, look it up online, or get ahold of a coach, and find out how/when you can try out for a walk-on.
