Sporty first car for 18 year old?

my son is 18,what is a good budget and good car. my son likes these.toyota mr2 mitsubishi fto mazda mx5 or rx8 toyota supra honda crx chevrolet corvette are any of these good and what about 4 door saloons he could get a 2001 passat.i was thinking of 5 thousand pounds as a budget that would be about 10 thousand dollars. all these cars are under 5 thousand pounds the car he gets will be used and will be older than 2007 model if it is a sports car all the cars i am saying you can get for under 5000 is from autotrader my sonand i both will be looking at this and be editing it.i think i can ger a rx8

Give an 18 year old sporty new car..and you surely are asking for trouble. With the car...present him a gun also... killing himself with a gun will be less painful.

My advice would be to get him a sporty-looking 4 cylinder sedan or wagon/hatchback, with a stick shift.  That way, he won't get raped on the insurance, but the stick shift and style will make him feel as though he has a faster car.

Which one?  So many to choose from; especially with the 5 door hatchbacks.  I expect we're only going to see more sporty styled 4 cylinder stick shift cars as the price of gas escalates.

Avoid the RX8 and Corvette and other like sport coupes like the plague; unless your son has a substantial amount of cash to waste on insurance.

A sports car for an eighteen year old is generally a bad idea.  I know he wants a "cool" car to impress the girls, but it's still a bad idea.  The gun comment was in very bad taste, but sports cars and young drivers often lead to bad results.

There are a number of automobiles with good safety ratings that make suitable first cars for young men.  I know this isn't what he wants to hear, but it is the truth.  

I would also suggest that you and your son speak with your insurance agent before you decide on which car to purchase. If you haven't talked to your insurance agent yet, please do so before your son gets his heart set on a vehicle that you cannot afford to insure.

^^ ignore the first comment. an RX8 is a great car and if you can get a good deal on one, go for it. About the sportiest car you can get for less the 10,000$, if you can find it that cheap.
