Spot-fixing: Tainted trio returns home
Pakistan’s disgraced trio returned to their country after attending a six-day hearing at Doha, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Qatar-c2986.
Former Test Captain Salman Butt and fast bowlers Mohammad Asif and Mohammad Amir flew back to http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Pakistan-c755 on Thursday. However, they refused to talk to the media.
It was later reported that the International Cricket Council has barred the cricketers from talking to the media.
The tainted trio were accompanied by their respective legal teams that barred the players from saying anything regarding the hearing. The 3-member tribunal hearing their case has deferred the final verdict until 5
February, 2011.
The players were whisked inside their cars at the Allama Iqbal International Airport, Lahore to avoid any questioning from the media.
However, Amir’s lawyer http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Shahid-c89347 Karim spoke briefly to the media and revealed their satisfaction about the hearing. “We are satisfied with ICC hearing,” Karim stated.
When asked about the outcome of the hearing, he said that they are barred from saying anything about the hearing.
It was revealed by the tribunal judge that the Oval Test was also under investigation in addition to the Lord’s Test against England in August 2010 but the panel cleared the three players from the Oval Test allegations.
The players were questioned by the ICC’s Anti Corruption Unit and http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Scotland-c756 Yard during the fourth Test after British tabloid, ‘News of the World’ revealed in a sting operation that Pakistani players were involved in spot-fixing during the Test match against
England.
Following the initial investigations, the ICC suspended the trio for being allegedly involved in spot-fixing.
The ICC then set up a three-man tribunal to look into the allegations against the players. The hearing was held in January 2011 behind closed doors after which the tribunal decided to defer the verdict until February.
After the players’ closing statements, the ICC lawyers expressed happiness with the way hearings went.
