Spot-fixing verdict ‘a massive wake-up call’, says http://www.senore.com/Cricket/GP-Swann-c1501 – Cricket News Update
Graeme Swann, the classy English off-spinner, has cited the recent spot-fixing verdict against three Pakistani players as ‘a massive wake-up call’ for the whole cricketing fraternity.
Despite admitting the reality that the fixers are doing their jobs across the globe, Swann is not ready to accept that the menace is wide-spread and cannot be controlled.
“This 'tip of the iceberg' stuff, I can't say I agree with it. If it's as rife as people say then I'd have an inkling, but I don't know anyone in the England team who's had a dodgy approach,” said Swann.
His remarks came in the wake of recent spot-fixing judgment in the Southwark Crown Court in London. The jury handed over varied prison terms to http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Mazhar-c75448 Majeed, for cheating and corruption in the game.
The controversy hit the media headlines last year, when the two Pakistani seamers deliberately delivered no-balls during the Lord’s Test against the hosts, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/England-c56013.
A few days ago, The England Test skipper, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/AJ-Strauss-c964, termed ICC's Anti-Corruption Unit (ACU) as a ‘toothless tiger’, and said that since the ACU is under-resourced, it is impossible for the body to curb extensive corruption in the sport.
However, Swann has some different thoughts, as he uttered that the recent scandal has explained the affair in plain words and thus, it will be far easier for the authorities to catch the culprits from now onwards.
"Even so, I'd like to think that these sentences will act as a massive wake-up call. It might just be a guy buying you a bag of peanuts at the bar and asking whether you'll bat first if you win the toss. But from now on that should set off alarm bells,"
shared the 32-year-old off-spinner who has served England in 36 Tests 64 One-dayers.
Swann will be England’s key man in the clash against the Men in Green, to be held in http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Pakistan-c755. The Northampton-born
spinner feels that the spot-fixing decision will not make any effect during the upcoming battle between the two teams.
