If you sprained your abdomen and wanted to bypass your primary care physician what kind of doctor would you see who could suggest treatment? I would consider physical therapy but they can not diagnose you.

  1. go ask ur doctor and he should tell you

  2. Why do you think that your PT cannot diagnosis a musculoskeletal condition?  It is part of the education to evaluate and treat neuromusculoskeletal conditions and screen for any underlying conditions which may require referral to a physician (such as a hernia).  Did you know that 85% of medical school graduates fail to demonstrate competency in a musculoskeletal exam?  (Freeman, et al).  However, if your state does not allow for direct access to PTs, I would recommend seeing a physiatrist prior to PT (a physician of rehabiliative medicine)

This is direct from our practice act in my state:

"Physical therapy" means all of the following:

            (A) EXAMNING, evaluating, and testing individuals

who may have mechanical, physiological, or developmental impairments, functional limitations, disabilities, or other health and movement‑related conditions, CLASSIFYING these disorders, determining a rehabilitation prognosis and plan of therapeutic intervention, and assessing the on‑going effects of the interventions.

  3. see your regular doctor or physican and have him take a look and recommend someone
