Question:

Spring Holiday in Tunisia?

I will be in Tunisia for six days in April, and i was wondering if it would be possible to visit Hamammet, Sousse, Tabarka, Tunis, Sidi Bou Said, Carthage, and maybe Monastir in 6 days? Also, how should i schedule visiting these places? And will i be able to take advantage of the beaches in April, or will it still be too cold? And are the trains and buses reliable in Tunisia, or would it be better to rent a car, or use a car service?

Thanks

  1. Lets see if I can answer all your questions.

1.) Yes it is possible to visit all those places in 6 days, BUT you may find that you want to spend more time in certain places to enjoy all that there is to offer and/or to enjoy the atmosphere and relax.

Tunis has the ancient ruins of the great historical city of Carthage and Sidi Bous Said in its suburbs. Tunis is also home to the North Africa American Cemetery. The medina is probably the most visited place in Tunis. It is marvelously preserved still enclosed by ramparts with gates for communication with the exterior. Here is a link to an answer I gave that lists some things to do in Tunis:

Tabarka is in the North-West of Tunisia. It is very popular for what is known as the Needles, and coral fishing. While you are there, be sure to visit the Genoese Castle. Although most of it is closed due to being used by the military, there is still a small section that is open to tourists and is even used as a museum.

Monastir is a popular destination because the city is very calm and quiet with gorgeous beaches, a few good restaurants, and is only 30mins from Sousse. It is particularly nice for those who want peace and quiet during the day but want to be close to good nightlife. The Ribat was used in filming Monty Pythons Life Of Brian, and the Italian Life of Christ. It is also the hometown of the first Tunisian president Habib Bourguiba.

Sousse (a lot of people think of Port el Kantaoui) is great because it offers lovely beaches but is still very much a bustling city with lots of shopping, food, and fun. The famous authentic medina is a UNESCO site.

2.) If I were you, I would try to do Tabarka first since it is the farthest out of the way. I would then group Tunis/Carthage/Sidi Bou Said together. Next, travel south and visit Sousse, then Monastir.

If you feel you have time, you could also visit Hammamet. It is between Tunis an Sousse. Hammamet & Yassmine Hammamet (same city, but divided into two parts) is popular because it is calm, quiet, yet has a great nightlife and wonderful beaches.

3.) In April, the weather can be either way. It is usually warm, but not terribly hot. I have seen a few brave souls venture out into the Sea, but honestly, the Sea really is not warm enough until May at the earliest. You could always try though. You might be able to stand colder water than others, or we might experience hotter than normal weather that would make the Sea comfortable to swim in early - you never know unless you try.

4.) The trains and buses are very reliable in Tunisia and are very easy to access. On top of that, since you will be traveling long distances, you also have the option of taking a luagge - a long distance taxi. Once inside the cities, you can either walk to your destinations, or take a taxi. Taxis are very reasonable, with most taxi rides being no more than 3-5TND.

Hope this helped. If I can be of any more help or assistance, please feel free to contact me.

  2. April is a lovely time to go because it won't be baking hot.

You can go to most of those places in 6 days. You can definitely arrange and visit Carthage, Tunis, Sousse, Monastir and Sidi Bou Said! I've done it. I'm not sure about the others but its really worth going. I went to El Djem to see the colosseum and it was great!

The beaches will probably a few degrees below but it wont be cold. I don't recommend you to rent a car because the roads are risky and it's difficult to drive on roads like these. You can definitely rely on buses because thats how i went around!
