Springboks' skipper John Smit delighted with teams’ impressive win over Fiji
South African captain, John Smit, is delighted with his teams’ cracking win over Fiji in the ongoing Rugby World Cup 2011. The Boks thumped the pacific nation side by a handsome margin of 49-3 on September 17 in Wellington. They stole six tries to bag the
second consecutive victory in the current global showpiece and helped their chances of defending their title successfully. Smit told the media in a pitch-side interview that the win will boost his side in upcoming matches.
Springboks started off their Rugby World Cup campaign in a sluggish way when they barely managed to surpass the Welsh side by a slight difference of 17-16 on September 11. That particular performance put a huge question mark on their ability to defend their
title in the tournament. The side needed a big victory to retain their lost momentum. The South Africans have been struggling with their performance since the Tri-Nations Cup 2011.
The Boks won just one match in the entire Tri-Nations and received stern criticism from various rugby circles. The Boks are now left with two more Pool matches against the meagre sides of Samoa and Namibia.
Talking to the media about the fresh victory for his side, Smit said that his squad was finding it hard to score earlier but things picked up later int he match. He added that, “That first 15-20 minutes was pretty brutal. Fiji basically came out there on
a mission, but the boys stuck to it and it was good to see how the guys matched fire with fire, and were accurate numbers wise and the decision making was good.”
The skipper further said that, “We started so slowly last week. We'd been talking about how to match aggressive attitude with composure in terms of how you want to play. It also helps when you've got a defence like ours, making it difficult for attacking
teams and frustrating guys as well.”
Springboks will face Namibia in their next clash of the Rugby World Cup 2011 on September 22.
