Springboks’ Jaque Fourie extends stay at Western Province by turning down possible switch to Japan
South African professional Rugby Union player, Jaque Fourie, has extended his stay with South African Rugby Union (SARU), as he has confirmed the extension in his stay with the Western Province.
The Western Province’s Managing Director, Rob Wagner, confirmed the extension in stay of Fourie with the club in an interview to the Cape Times on Wednesday, October 19. The announcement has ended reports regarding Fourie’s possible switch to Japan.
Earlier, it was reported that Fourie is likely to sign for the Japanese Football Rugby Union (JFRU) side, Kobe Steelers. Both Fourie and Western Province confirmed that the Steelers are in
contact with the Springboks international centre for a possible switch.
Following Springboks unsuccessful 2011 Rugby World Cup, in which the defending champions failed to retain their title, Fourie made headlines for his prospective move to the Far eastern country.
Wagner has confirmed Fourie’s stay at the club, the managment has not disclosed any details regarding the contract. Wagner confirmed that they are in process of finalising the details of the
contract, which will be made available to the masses in due course of time.
Providing more information, Wagner said, “Jaque is staying. I can't say what the length of the new contract is as we are still busy negotiating further details, but I can say that he is staying.”
Wagner further has confirmed that all of their Springboks international players have extended their stay with the club. He said, “All the other Boks have already signed contracts to play for
us.”
The Carletonville born Fourie made his international debut for the South African international Rugby Union side in 2003. He was part of the Springboks 2011 Rugby World Cup squad, where he
complete making 69 international appearances for his country.
It is expected that Fourie and Western Province will came up with a deal similar to Peter Grant’s deal, in which Fourie can play for JFRU side during the Currie Cup season and return to SARU
to participate in the Super Rugby season.
Additionally, Western Province will take on the Golden Lions in the semi-final of the 2011 ABSA Currie Cup during the upcoming weekend.
