Springboks’ coach Peter de Villiers outburst at Sonny Bill Williams’ playing style – Rugby News
Springboks coach Peter de Villiers blasted at All Blacks and Crusaders star Sonny Bill Williams’ playing style and called it ‘devastating example for youngsters’.
Peter de Villiers commented after Crusaders rolled over the Stormers in a Super Rugby match.
Speaking to the reporters at the practice session of the Springboks, coach said that Williams was doing everything wrong in rugby. De Villiers cleared his point and said, "He is doing everything wrong what rugby principles (requires) of you in the game.
I mean back-hand passes shouldn't be the norm. It has become the norm, now everybody wants to do those kinds of nonsense and they forget about the basic principles of the game."
However de Villiers admitted the fact that the young guy has got real talent which is needed to be polished. Peter stated what he is doing at Super Rugby level is remarkable but he should modify his playing style and convert it into acceptable at international
level. He added, “At Super 15 he's fantastic, I'm sure he'll be good at test match level as well. He's a quality player, we used to watch him play league and he was a fantastic player, so that's his [De Villiers] opinion.”
Meanwhile the Springboks’ skipper Schalk Burger, unlike his coach has applauded Williams and said that he was doing marvellous job. He also cleared that what de Villiers was saying regarding Sonny he is not involved in that conspiracy. Burger stated that
he will try to keep a vigilant eye on the star player during their match against the Crusaders.
Williams was highly praised by the local media of South Africa as the Crusaders are to play three matches of the ongoing Super Rugby championship. He has a unique style of rugby which is appreciated around the globe, except by de Villiers. The versatile
player has really picked his side up in the current season and Crusaders are enjoying with four top spots sides at the points table. The Crusaders have grabbed eight victories after eleven outgoings in this year’s Super 15.
