Springboks skipper John Smit committed to improving performance against All Blacks - Rugby News
The Springboks captain, John Smit, has stated that he is motivated to pick up his teams’ performance in their upcoming clash of Tri-Nations Cup against the All Blacks on July 30 in Wellington. His squad displayed poor rugby against the Wallabies in the opening
clash of the current tournament on July 23, in Sydney.
Talking to journalists on July 27, Smit said that Springboks will not repeat the same errors in their upcoming match. His captaincy was slammed by former Springboks’ prop, Ollie le Roux, who asked Smit to quit from the team before the Rugby World Cup 2011.
Smit is leading an untested Springboks squad after most of his veteran players were ruled out from the opening two games of the Tri-Nations due to various injuries. South African Rugby Union (SARU) has rested 21 leading players due to their poor fitness
after the exhausting season of Super Rugby.
Talking to reporters, the Boks captain said that his team is working on its weaknesses and will try to give a better output against the All Blacks. He further said that, “We've done a lot of work on eradicating the simple errors and hopefully we have fixed
that in the two days we have had. We certainly didn't get to sneak in undetected and their breakdown was certainly something they were worried about and they pretty much fixed that against us and we lost that battle at the breakdown on Saturday.”
Talking about the number of youngsters in the side, he said that he has now spent some time with the new boys and it will help in the next game. He also stated that, “Winning would be lovely, we're here to play and win every Test match we play in. Sometimes
you don't get to choose your cards, you have got to play the hand you have been dealt.”
The Springboks are passing through a huge injury crisis and their administration is under immense pressure after the humiliating defeat against the Wallabies. Furthermore, they have not won any match at ANZ Stadium in the last 23 years which will put extra
pressure on them come Saturday.
