I am a fairly novice triathlete and my main concern is that the lake will be just too cold this time of year? I would wear a wetsuit...is it reasonable for me to do this race?

  1. people wear wetsuits even when it's not cold in my experience.  just make sure its ok for this particular race.  i'm not in ny so idk if the sprint distances are different than from where I live, but I think as long as you've been training for it then you should be fine. good luck!

  2. Definitely.  There is nothing like jumping into a cold lake or pond to do a tri.

Before the race, put the wet suit on and make sure you do a good warm up in the water to get your body warmed up.  You don't want to just jump in and start with the water that cold.  Most races issue swimming caps, but if not be sure to have one to help keep the heat loss through your head to a minimum.  Be prepared to have trouble getting shoes and clothes on in the first transition because of cold hands.  Good luck and let us know how you do!
